Getting Ready for Winter

The calendar says it’s fall, but this weekend’s forecast sounds like winter!  Time to get ready for cold weather.

Hopefully you have already accomplished a few things during this fall to get your home ready such as cleaning out the eaves drops of leaves so that it can flow freely, caulking windows & doorways to eliminate heat escape.  One thing many may not know is that your furnace and flue should have a proper inspection and cleaning to ensure efficiency and safety.  Not only does it provide better heating and safety for your family but also should avoid any malfunction on a bitterly cold night leaving you with no heat until you can get a serviceman to fix the problem.  Many times you have no alternative but to pay overtime and your costs are more than if you would have had  the maintenance performed to start with.

Another item in need of attention is your outdoor water fountain.  If you live in an area that freezes during the winter then there are precautions to take to prevent damage to your garden water fountain.  Drain all water and clean the bowl or basin.  Allow to dry thoroughly.  Then cover with a fountain cover to prevent snow, ice or rain to fill it again.  The water fountain cover will keep it dry and protect it from the elements until spring arrives and you can start enjoying it again.  If left outside with no cover most likely you will have cracks and lots of damage to your water fountain and be seeking ways of repair and more costs next spring instead of just a quick hook up.

As usual, an ounce of prevention saves oodles of dollars.
